June 25, 2008 : Alzheimer's gene provides drug hope
A gene that almost doubles the risk of developing the most common form of dementia, Alzheimer’s, has been found by scientists.
Although there is going to be little appetite for taking a test based on this discovery, when the disease is so hard to treat, the advance does highlight a new potential target for drugs to combat Alzheimer’s, which affects one in 20 of those over 65, causing loss of memory, personality changes and, eventually, death.
